Career To Careers

Webster's 1913 Dictionary describes Career as being, "General course of action or conduct in life, or in a particular part or calling in life...". This definition still holds true in the 21st century. The difference is that instead of it applying to one calling as it did then, it may now apply to a multitide of careers. Career Planning

Planning ones career(s) should focus on an entire worklife. Consider that within the past year, the insurance industry revised the acturarial tables upwards from 80 to 100 years. Beside getting a better rate on life insurance, this means that all of us have the opportunity(?) to work longer due to extended life expectancies. The job market is changing as we speak. Growing Up?

One of the most interesting questions that is commonly asked in informal company and increasingly by interviewers is, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" The problem with this question besides the fact that it is demeaning is that it might not be relevant. Growing up implies that one has settled on their life's strategy and making the appropriate sacrifices to achieve it. This presumes of course, that there is such a strategy. Possibly the question should be rephrased to be, "What do I want to do to grow?"

Careers Growth

    Why, How, Where?
  1. The first step is to look about the employment landscape. With the effects of outsourcing, the aging of the baby boom generation and the move into the information society, the market is morphing into unpredictable shapes. Common wisdom dictatates that every worker needs to keep learning new skills and acquiring current knowledge just to stay in their chosen profession.
  2. Figure out what your product is by voluntarily taking career assessment tests. You can do this online. As they say, "It can be done in the privacy of your home." It can be done over an extended period of time when the pressure is off.
  3. All of this information should be considered pieces of a puzzle. Feel free to move them about to suit your needs. One set of apptitudes and career choices can lead in unexpected directions whereas another set may end in a stagnant cul de sac of a career. It is up to you to figure out which piece fits where. It can't be stressed enough that career assessment tests are a good source of decision making information.
  4. Think outside the box. Take the long view by accepting the fact you may have multiple careers. Take courses in areas that interest you. Use your minds eye to project what an alternative career might look like.
  5. Become your own Career Planner. Use the professionals wisely. They provide a fresh perspective and years of experience. However, you are the best source of career planning information.
  6. Relax. The common wisdom, "Do something well and the money will follow" has some merit to it.
