Why Develop a Daily Routine?
Successful people develop routines to govern their daily activities. These patterns can get old in a hurry. However, overtime the routines incorporate considerable experience and knowledge as to how to keep them going without interruption. The same applies to job searches. It doesn't matter what type of job search it is. In fact, there are many reasons a job search can stall. The emotional impact of a job loss, lack of a work at home opportunity, limited consulting work can cost days due to worry and various concerns(Check out ConquerAnxiety.com for some answers). A routine if setup systematically and followed fairly consistently can solve this type of situation. This example of a job search routine centers on the use of a Job Search Tracking Tool. We developed Ejobs Reporter with routines in mind. That is why such an emphasis has been placed on its report generating capabilities. Reports are the life blood of every business. So it should be with a personal job search. As you can see from the schedule, the reports are used at the beginning of the day to set the agenda and at the end to summarize the day's progress. How a Job Search Tracking Tool Sets the PaceThe getting up part is self explanatory. Hopefully, the earlier the better. However, one thing to keep in mind is that this is an example. Actual job seeker routines themselves will vary widely. The reason is as simple as some people are morning types and others are for the evening. Cold Calling is a grind. The only way to do it successfully is through preparation. If you know who you are calling and why, the process becomes slightly more manageable. Furthermore, if you don't have a handle on what you did or want to do, you are going to have a hard time figuring out the next step. We feel that you need good information to help with this. You need to know who your contacts are for each listing. It might take some detective work to accomplish this. You need to establish if a particular job meets your needs by using a preference indicator. You need to take a look at where the job is located. Travel can be a problem for even Work at Home job seekers. Certainly this applies to consultants whose primary concern are travel costs. Such job information can only be managed by entering job listing information into a database, scoring it and then reporting on it as needed. Ejobs Reporter handles this. The principal report Ejobs provides is the Worksheet which lists the available jobs and contact information. The first column is a checkbox. The checkbox can be used to indicate who is to be contacted in the coming period or was contacted in the past. After the necessary emails have been handled, usually requests for information from a recruiter, the daily worksheet sets the pace. It summarizes all the important information needed to decide who to contact and why. The determining factor is how the Worksheet is sorted. If the job searcher scored each listing for such things as their interest in the job and the prospect of actually getting it(an estimate of course), the worksheet can be ordered by these preference indicators. It makes sense to start with the job that you like the most and that you have the greatest chance of getting. With this information in hand, the searcher can begin contacting the recruiters in order of importance. This is the most critical function of our hypothetical day (9:00 AM - 12:00PM)(12:30 PM - 3:30 PM). The Searcher can use the Worksheet to reinforce their search routine. Interspersed with the calls will be the addition of new listings, the capture of missing contact information and scoring of preference indicators. The End of The DayA job search is by its nature a demoralizing process. Job Stress (searching is a fulltime occupation) can create real problems. For the majority of us, if you fail you starve. Immediate gratification is the order of the day. That is why progress reports are so important. We are not being cute by listing the category "Review Progress with Significant Other." Partners are included in the search process whether they like it or not. The ability to check off the recruiters contacted or the listings added during the day can keep a search for work moving forward for them as well as the job seeker. In any case, summaries are key components in maintaining a consistent job search routine. |
