Job Stress TransferThe media within the past ten years has popularized stress on the job. Of course, they are picking up on a trend where postal workers go "Postal" and despondent executives have threatened the lives of their families. The old adage, "Where there is smoke, there is fire." may very well apply here. The common theme is that job stress can and does transfer into the non job portion of our lives. But the caricatures presented by the media are far too episodic to do reality real justice. In most cases, job stress follows the well known quote of Henry David Thoreau in Walden that, "The mass of men live lives of quiet desperation." Job stress is known to adversely affect family health, shorten promising careers, and create desperation. The combination is powerful. We now have an endless stream of information at our fingertips. At the first sign of a crisis, we can look up every symptom, condition and resource imaginable. We can overwhelm ourselves with solutions. The result is often the easiest or most immediate one that is available. This is not always the best path to take. Preventative maintenance can work much better. Crisis Management is Too LateTo prevent job stress, you must first understand that it is an expected part of life. At a stress therapy course, the instructor stated that the only time you don't experience it is when you are dead. The problem is identifying when stress has hit unacceptable levels and how to manage it. Herein lies the problem. Coping with stress is not a crisis management process. The effects of stress are so far reaching and insidious that it takes time to learn how to manage it. Stress management is a complicated undertaking. You may have read that with certain types of breathing, physical regimens, or comfort foods, stress can be reduced. If this were true then, there wouldn't be so many cases of high blood pressure or heart attacks. As with learning a required set of job skills to be successful, so it should be with learning the what, where and how of stress control. The benefit of studying it before hand can produce significant dividends for the student and their family. The most important of which is that job stress and the effects of stress can be put into their place. It is a part of life and can be dealt with. The student will begin understanding that it is unfair to transfer stress from one part of a life to another. Is it reasonable to bring anger on the job to a child's good night? Take the time to research the discipline of Stress Control and the results could be quite dramatic. |
